Blaine Dickson - His name means action
by Jess Hernandez
Twenty-year-old -Blaine Dickson who hails from El Monte, Calif. but now makes _ his home in Las Vegas,
Nevada is blazing a fistic trail that may lead to a title match. Managed by Tom Fischer, 131 pound Dickson
has a fight ledger of 11-2 with a string of five KOs. The majority of Dickson's wins have been recorded in Las
Vegas's plush Silver Slipper and Hacienda Arenas.
Blaine Dickson is the kind of determined fighter who gives the fans and promoters what they want—plenty of
ring action. In fact, Blaine, a solid 5-8, is now knocking at the door of stardom in boxing.
Two-fisted Blaine Dickson launched his professional career under the management of Tom Fischer on July
25, 1979 in Las Vegas with a sensational two-round KO triumph over Ney Santiago. Two months later on
Sept. 19, 1979, Dickson savagely knocked out Mauro Fuentes in one round. On Oct. 15, 1979, Dickson
made his ring debut at the Olympic Audltorium in Los Angeles scoring a six-round win over Cissi Mory. in the
first round Mory knocked down Dickson but the tough-minded Las Vegas slugger got up to nab the six round
decision.
On Nov. 21, 1979, Blaine Dickson scored his fourth sensation win in the jr. lightweight division with an
impressive six-round KO triumph over tough Vito Romero. Romero was undefeated going into this important
fight. It was in this bout that Dickson started attracting the fans at the popular Silver Slipper Arena. On Feb.
28, 1980, Dickson opened the year with a sixth round triumph over outclassed 131-pounder Rosendo
Ramirez from Lost Angeles, Calif. 20-year-old Dickson is trained by veterans Gary Orchard and Tony Mora.
One of Dickson's most sensational fights came on April 2, 1980 against tough Ricardo Jiminez in Las Vegas.
The fight was action~packed, toe-to-toe all the way with Blaine gaining the 10-round win. The fans loved the
action fight so much they showered the arena with coins. "I know that I've got a hot piece of merchandise in
Dickson. That Dickson is going to be a helluva good jr. lightweight. He is now ranked no. 13 in the N.A.B.F
rankings," replied manager Tom Fischer.
Dickson posted his ninth straight triumph on July 24, 1980 when he outpointed Robert Garcia in 10 rounds to
capture the Western Regional Championship belt in the 131 pound class. A bad cough and chest congestion
combined to end Blaine Dickson's undefeated win streak.
Poor health conditions contributed to Dickson's sixth round TKO loss to hard-punching 131 pounder Ken
Sallee in Las Vegas on Sept. 25, 1980. Dickson had Sallee in trouble in the second round where he dropped
his opponent to the canvas with a hard right hand punch. Then in the late rounds Dickson ran out of gas and
suffered his first loss in 10 fights. Blaine regained his winning form after losing to Ken Sallee on the night of
Dec. 29, 1980 in Las Vegas beating Jaime Nava in a tough and close 10 rounder. Dickson showed how much
he had improved as jr. lightweight on the night of Dec. 26, 1980. On that night in Las Vegas, Dickson
hammered into defeat veteran Ricardo Jimenez in -one round. This was the same fighter who on April 2,
1980 has traveled 10 rounds with Dickson. A solid right hand shot on Jimenez's chin rendered him helpless.
Perhaps the best fight in the career of Blaine Dickson came on Feb. 26, 1981 at Las Vegas' Hacienda Hotel
Arena. Dickson met Refugio Rojas, a dangerous 131-pounder with a notorious punch. Blaine exhibited a
dandy combination of good boxing and punching to hammer out a unanimous 10-round win over Rojas.
Dickson boxed brilliantly in the first seven rounds but tired badly in the late heats. Today, 20-year-old Blaine
Dickson is one of the most popular jr. lightweights in Las Vegas. His style of fighting has captured the awe
and -i imagination of ring fans in the Silver Slipper Hotel and Hacienda Hotel Arena. A solid punch with both
hands, Dickson is a durable ringman with a solid KO wallop. Manager Tom Fischer is adamant that his dandy
jr. lightweight from El Monte, Calif. will be a contender for junior lightweight throne.
The only fight that Blaine Dickson suffered any trouble with was in his fight with veteran Jose Caba who
fought Danny Lopez for the featherweight crown. Caba halted Dickson in seven rounds with a cut eye.
Dickson wants a rematch to even the score with Caba. Without any doubt, 20-year~old Blaine Dickson is the
jr. lightweight to watch in the near future. He looks like the best bet to climb the top rung of the jr. lightweight
class. He's all action once the bell rings!
